Catlin Carithers died Sunday after inmates at a correctional facility rioted in Mississippi.
A guard has died and 16 officers were injured at the Adams County Correctional Facility near here after as many as 300 inmates rioted, armed with makeshift weapons such as broomsticks and trash can lids, officials said.
Catlin Carithers, 24, of Meadville, Miss. died Sunday of blunt force trauma to the head, Adams County Coroner James Lee said. He was on the roof of one of buildings of the 2,567-bed private prison, owned and operated by Nashville, Tenn.-based Corrections Corporation of America, when the assault occurred. Three inmates also were hurt.
“It is often said in corrections that no matter how prepared we are — indeed, no matter how well-trained and experienced we become — nothing can brace us for the sobering loss of one of our own,” CCA President and CEO Damon Hininger said in a release Monday.
More than two dozen correctional officers were held hostage at one point and had to be rescued, Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said. Prison personnel gained total control of the complex late Sunday, hours after the uprising began at about 2:40 p.m. CDT, and all prisoners were back in their cells 12 hours later.
The disturbance appears to have been the result of a power struggle among prison gangs and was contained on prison grounds, Mayfield said.
