Republican students are demanding that the University of California-Los Angeles not force them to accept a “bizarre” security fee policy for a November 13 speech by Ben Shapiro. The policy requires that at least 70% of attendees be UCLA students, otherwise the Bruin Republicans club will be required to cover the full cost of security for the event.
Republican students are demanding that the University of California-Los Angeles not force them to accept a “bizarre” security fee policy for a November 13 speech by Ben Shapiro.
According to a letter sent on the club’s behalf by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the proposed “70/30 agreement” would require that 70 percent of attendees be UCLA students, stipulating that should this quota not be met, the individual officers of Bruin Republicans would be held financially responsible for security costs assessed by the administration.
The letter asks the school to “immediately rescind the security fees assessed to Bruin Republicans for the upcoming Event and confirm that [the Bruin Republicans] will not be required to sign the contract or comply.”
According to Bruin Republicans Vice President Tyler Fowlkes, the UCLA administration has advised the group that specific cost estimates cannot be given until the week of the scheduled event, but has already “openly acknowledged” that there is “no way” the Bruin Republicans will be able to fund the event considering the added costs.
Fowlkes told Campus Reform that he believes UCLA’s response to the letter “will depend upon outcry,” noting that “public opinion can very much shape policy” because according to the First Amendment, “Anybody should be able come and speak at a public university regardless of political affiliation.”

Ben Shapiro, an attorney and bestselling author, is the editor-in-chief of DailyWire.com and the host of “The Ben Shapiro Show.” Shapiro is leading the crusade against political correctness on campuses across the country, and infuriating leftists every step of the way. Sarah Palin says that Americans should “consider Ben’s advice about how we must stand up and push back twice as hard against this bullying.” Sean Hannity says to join Ben Shapiro and “fight back” against liberal bullying. And Michelle Malkin says Shapiro is “infused with the indomitable spirit of his friend and mentor Andrew Breitbart.”

For the first time in 20 years, Berkeley is allowing police officers to use pepper spray for crowd control as the city prepares for possibly violent riots at a Ben Shapiro event. Officers will only be allowed to use their pepper spray on those who commit acts of violence, which the city is hoping to prevent by prohibiting weapons and masks during Shapiro’s speech.
The Berkeley Police Department has been authorised to use pepper spray as a crowd control weapon for the first time in 20 years as officers prepare for protests on Thursday night.
According to The Los Angeles Times, the Berkeley City Council approved the move in a 6-3 vote Tuesday, just two days before the University of California, Berkeley is scheduled to host popular conservative speaker Ben Shapiro, and just over a week ahead of another controversial event featuring Milo Yiannopoulos.
The decision, requested by Police Chief Andrew Greenwood, overturns a 1997 ban on the use of the chemical agent for crowd-control, and allows police to utilize the tool on protesters “who are committing acts of violence upon police or others.”
Despite the relaxation of restrictions, however, officers are still not allowed to spray protesters engaged in nonviolent behavior or disperse crowds.
Meanwhile, the city also announced a temporary prohibition on weapons at various parks during Shapiro’s speech, a precaution that failed to prevent an outbreak of Antifa violence at a previous demonstration in August.

“Do not come ready to do violence in defense of my free speech rights,” Shapiro said. “We just paid so that Berkeley will do it. Right? Either Berkeley is going to protect my free speech rights or they’re not.”
The University of California, Berkeley is charging the College Republicans group a $15,000 “security fee” to host conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro next month.
Conservative organization Young America’s Foundation announced Tuesday that it will step in and pay what it’s calling “effectively a tax on free speech.”
This comes after Milo Yiannopoulos cancelled a February speech at Berkeley when fiery riots resulted in thousands of dollars of property damage. Ann Coulter also cancelled an April speech at the university due to concerns about student safety.
On “The Story,” Shapiro said he’s expecting Antifa demonstrators to show up and try to cause violence, but he urged his fans and supporters not to show up ready to “do battle.”
