Sessions to Republicans: GOP Elite View on Immigration Is ‘Nonsense’

“Like Obamacare, this 1,200-page immigration bill is a legislative monstrosity inimical to the interests of our country and the American people.”

In a sharp memo sent this morning to fellow Republicans on Capitol Hill, Senator Jeff Sessions argues that the GOP elite view on immigration–shared by President Barack Obama and Senator Chuck Schumer–is “nonsense.” Instead, Sessions, the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, advises his fellow Republicans to adopt a “humble and honest populism.”

The Sessions memo begins, “The GOP needs to flip the immigration debate on its head. The same set of GOP strategists, lobbyists, and donors who have always favored a proposal like the Gang of Eight immigration bill argue that the great lesson of the 2012 election is that the GOP needs to push for immediate amnesty and a drastic surge in low-skill immigration. This is nonsense.”

The senator from Alabama goes on to argue that Republicans will win big elections if they can appeal to “working Americans of all backgrounds.” And he says that if this immigration bill becomes law, “Low-income Americans will be hardest hit”

Sessions’s advice to his fellow Republicans is clear: Don’t help Obama hurt America. The Republican-lead House is currently working on the Senate-approved immigration bill.

Kid Rock, Ted Nugent Not Surprised By Bankrupt Detroit, Voice Optimism

“We saw this coming,” says Nugent, who blames liberals for the city’s woes. “We’ve already shed our tears and fortified ourselves and improvised and adapted. We pray every night, and I believe it will turn around”

A couple of Detroit’s stalwart rock heroes are voicing optimism for the home town’s future in the wake of the city’s bankruptcy proceedings.

“It’s a blow, but we’ve been taking blows for years,” Kid Rock tells Billboard. “I don’t think people are that surprised with the bankruptcy — I mean people I know in Michigan. Everywhere else they are. Now that everything’s out in the papers and they’re giving all the statistics about Detroit and the shape it’s in and this, that and the other people outside are like, ‘Wow, I had no idea…’ They know Detroit’s run-down and it’s dangerous and it has political problems, but when they start reading the statistics, that’s what they really talk about. But I don’t think it’s a big shock to anybody in the area. We’ve all known what’s going on.”

Rock himself has been a major supporter of and ambassador for Detroit over the years, including through is own charitable foundation and his Made In Detroit apparel company. But he hesitates to voice an opinion about what he thinks should be done to clean up the situation.

Washington DC Cathedral Vandal Is Arrested: Mandarin Translator Required

A fifth landmark in Washington — Luther Place Memorial Church — was also defaced. The court documents allege that a woman matching Tian’s description was seen at the church Sunday. White paint mixed with urine and feces was splattered on the church’s organ.

Now that the Washington, DC, paint vandal has been caught, the media has seemingly lost interest in the shocking story of damage done to the Lincoln Memorial and other beloved national treasures. Perhaps the accused perp’s diverse identity has something to do with the sudden quiet. Were the scribblers hoping against all reason that the defacer was a Tea Party member?

In fact, the arrested person is Jiamei Tian (pictured), 58, who was arrested with a soda can filled with green paint and whose clothes were spattered with the telltale color. She was identified by her Chinese passport and recently expired visa.

The green paint attacks in recent days included the Lincoln Memorial, a statue near the Smithsonian castle and the National Cathedral. Tian is thought by police to be connected to the other vandalism.

For a brief time, reports said there was a “language barrier” with the arrested person. On Tuesday, a Mandarin interpreter was brought to court.

Website of the Week: The Rifleman

THE RIFLEMAN was ranked 46th of the 100 all-time greatest television shows in the July 5/12, 2013 issue of the television trade publication Entertainment Weekly. It was the highest ranked western in the hit parade of TV show listings.

What becomes a legend most?

No one would have imagined when the 168th and last episode of THE RIFLEMAN was broadcast in 1963, and the sun set for the last time on the town of North Fork, that THE RIFLEMAN would become an enduring classic television series. But, more than 50 years on, Lucas McCain and his son Mark and Marshal Micah Torrance continue to find their way into the living rooms of television viewers thanks to cable tier networks like AMC-TV and MeTV, where it is seen in more than 46 broadcast outlets in the US and Canada. And of course, there’s Hulu and the official website, where selected episodes can be seen online.

Arthur Gardner, one of the show’s original producers, is bemused. At 103, he still visits the offices of Levy-Gardner-Laven Productions (LGL Productions), which owns the series to this day, and with a twinkle in his eye he will tell you that it’s the fans who keep the show going. And not only the original viewers—the rearguard of the baby boomer generation—who remember watching the weekly series on ABC, but also their kids and their great grandkids, and a new generation that has found the series all on its own.

Gardner gives all credit to his partners Jules Levy and Arnold Laven for producing a show with characters and themes that people not only cared about, but also admired. He will tell you that Jules dreamed up the show title and Arnold, who directed many of the episodes, developed the show around four core themes, from which it never deviated. The show focused on the Winchester rifle, the father-son relationship, the simple wisdom of parables or moral lessons told through story-telling, and of course, classic western motifs. Add well-written stories and sympathetic characters believably portrayed by the show’s stars, Chuck Connors as Lucas McCain playing father opposite Johnny Crawford as son Mark, and THE RIFLEMAN seems to have tapped the universal appeal of memorable characters and timeless themes that everyone can to relate to on a personal level.

New Pelosi Agenda: Moms Free from ‘Burden of Child Care’

In an interview on National Public Radio (NPR), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said her new agenda for women will give mothers access to day care so they can “earn without carrying the burden of child care.”

During the interview, aired on Weekend Edition Sunday, Pelosi spoke about her newly announced agenda, which is on her website, and is titled, “When Women Succeed, America Succeeds: An Economic Agenda for Women and Families,” a plan that includes universal pre-school and access to day care for working women, and an increase in the minimum wage.

“The child care issue probably has to be done in steps,” Pelosi told NPR host Susan Stamberg. “But when children are learning, parents can be learning. And when the children are in preschool, that frees parents to earn without carrying the burden of the child care.”

“We are hopeful we can make it too hot for people to handle ignoring these women’s issues and get something done even before we get into the electoral season next year,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi’s agenda makes the claim that “families are generally left on their own for providing child care,” which she sees as a problem in the United States.

The agenda website lists solutions to women’s problems such as President Barack Obama’s Preschool and Early Head Start/Child Care Initiativ, and “adequate” federal funding for child care programs.

CNN’s Don Lemon: Bill O’Reilly’s Criticism Of Black Community “Doesn’t Go Far Enough”

Pay attention to and think about what has been presented in recent history as acceptable behavior. Pay close attention to the hip-hop and rap culture that many of you embrace. A culture that glorifies everything I just mentioned, thug and reprehensible behavior, a culture that is making a lot of people rich, just not you.

DON LEMON, CNN ANCHOR: I want to talk to you because we’re going to take a break from the headlines to talk about something I’ve had on my mind for quite some time now. So much so that I felt compelled to bring back our segment where we hold politicians, leaders, and pundits accountable for what comes out of their mouths. It’s time now, again, for No Talking Points.

The Trayvon Martin murder case got just about everybody talking about race, and not just specifically how it related to the case. It got some, many on the political right, wondering why the so-called liberal media wasn’t talking about other problems in the black community.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JUDY MILLER, FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR: Let’s talk about race. Let’s talk about black-on-black violence.

DAVID WEBB, HOST “THE DAVID WEBB SHOW”: The outrage that I have is in the lack of really the national attention to what is an epidemic of crime in the black community committed largely by blacks.

Inca mummies: Child sacrifice victims fed drugs and alcohol

Dr Brown explained: “From what we know of the Spanish chronicles, particularly attractive or gifted women were chosen. The Incas actually had someone who went out to find these young women and they were taken from their families.”

Tests on three mummies found in Argentina have shed new light on the Inca practice of child sacrifice.

Scientists have revealed that drugs and alcohol played a key part in the months and weeks leading up to the children’s deaths.

Tests on one of the children, a teenage girl, suggest that she was heavily sedated just before her demise.

The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr Emma Brown, from the department of archaeological sciences at the University of Bradford, said: “The Spanish chroniclers suggest that children were sacrificed for all kinds of reasons: important life milestones in the lives of the Incas, in times of war or natural disasters, but there was a calendar of rituals too.”

Frozen in time

The mummified remains were discovered in 1999, entombed in a shrine near the summit of the 6,739m-high Llullaillaco volcano in Argentina.

Three children were buried there: a 13-year-old girl, and a younger boy and girl, thought to be about four or five years old.

Their remains date to about 500 years ago, during the time of the Inca empire, which dominated South America until the Europeans arrived at the end of the 15th Century.

Emperor of the North Pole – Trailer

“The magic is as wide as a smile and as narrow as a wink, loud as laughter and quiet as a tear, tall as a tale and deep as emotion. So strong, it can lift the spirit. So gentle, it can touch the heart. It is the magic that begins the happily ever after.” – Unknown
