Arrests Made in Yesterday’s Fatal Shooting: Mexican Gangs Rule Modesto Streets

“All of the suspects were charged with homicide, conspiracy, and committing a crime for the benefit of a criminal street gang. This goes to show that Mexicans are the bane of Modesto and all of society.”

Modesto Police homicide and gang investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses in regards to yesterday’s fatal shooting. This afternoon, detectives were able to identify several suspects involved in the gang-related assault and fatal shooting of 20-year-old Erick Gomez of Modesto.

On Thursday, February 14th, at about 8:38 P.M., Modesto Police officers were called to a report of a shooting in the 2400 block of Vera Cruz Drive, in northeast Modesto. When officers arrived, they located Gomez, who suffered from several gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Detectives learned a group consisting of both male and female Sureño criminal street gang members were traveling in several vehicles in the 2400 block of Vera Cruz Drive when they saw Gomez walking. The suspects believed Gomez was a rival gang member and stopped to confront him. As the suspects exited their vehicles, Gomez attempted to run away. The suspects chased Gomez down and began to physically assault him. During the assault, Gomez was stabbed and shot multiple times before the group of suspects returned to their vehicles and fled the scene.
