Jesse Jackson, NAACP to lend help to Occupy Phoenix

The National Council of La Raza, Service Employees International Union and other minority and labor union groups are sponsoring the Phoenix event.

More than 1,000 community organizers and union activists are in Phoenix this weekend for a conference, and they will lend support to the small band of Occupy Phoenix protesters downtown.

The NAACP is hosting the “We are One” conference at the Phoenix Convention Center through Dec. 4. The National Council of La Raza, Service Employees International Union and other minority and labor union groups are sponsoring the Phoenix event.

“We have come to Phoenix to strategize and learn from our civil rights and labor rights partners,” said Dedrick Muhammed, senior director of economic programs for the NAACP.

Rev. Jesse Jackson is also attending the conference and lending support to the fledgling Occupy Phoenix protests at Cesar Chavez Plaza across from Phoenix City Hall.

The local Occupy effort expects to benefit from some political allies being in town this weekend. That includes a joint effort with the We are One conference and AFL-CIO on Sunday. Jackson is meeting with and marching with Occupy Phoenix protesters today.
