Racial Legacies series to address Latino issues

The racial legacy of Latinos is their invasion of the United states.

Before National Hispanic Heritage Month ends, the Racial Legacies & Learning series hopes to address issues in the local Latino community with free and open community town halls Wednesday and Thursday in Hamilton and Middletown.

The series – sponsored by Miami University, and Hamilton, Middletown and Fairfield schools – hopes to create dialogue that can enhance and improve racial relations, said Jimmie Jones, an organizer of the event and Miami University regional director of diversity & director of multicultural services.

The major theme of this week’s 26th town hall in the series is the personal journeys taken by many Latinos who have come to the United States from Mexico and Latin America, especially those of women and children.

Butler County had a total increase in the Hispanic/ Latino population of 207 percent from 4,771 people in 2000 to 14,670 last year, 2010 census data shows.
