There’s a conjoined-Siamese-twins relationship between unions and the Democratic Party. And the party’s aim is to cultivate Latinos as a big new dependable voting bloc.

The historic N.J. Statehouse, built in 1790, has witnessed some strange sights in its time. There was the day in 1978, for example, a berserk woman drove her Oldsmobile up the front steps and hurled a shopping bag. In it was her mom’s head.

Hard to top. But a close second had to be the time, 1996, INS agents raided the government facility for harboring illegal aliens. (Back in those days, illegal aliens were referred to as illegal aliens.)

The INS had in its sights the Statehouse cleaning crew.

The agents mustered forces at the side of the Statehouse, across the way from the Old Barracks, where King George’s mercenary Hessians had once lodged.

The agents then swooped in on the history-imbued target. (The nation’s second oldest Statehouse in continuous legislative use, Maryland’s being oldest). So successful was the raid that the INS had to commandeer a basement room in the Statehouse to process all of the collars — mostly Guatemalans of dubious immigration status.
