Whites Need Not Apply: Black Leaders In Fresno Oppose White ‘Cultural Studies’ Teacher

“We’re just saying what the community wants,” said Rev. Karen Crozier, one of the activists. “We didn’t fight for a white male or female teacher to educate our babies.”

Black community leaders in Fresno, Calif., are urging the Fresno Unified School District to re-evaluate the hiring of a white guy to teach three cultural studies courses at a brand-new middle school that will overwhelmingly serve minority students.

Rutherford B. Gaston Middle School — named after the city’s first black principal — will open in a few short weeks. It’s the first middle school in the immediate, poverty-ridden vicinity since 1979.

The protesters are unhappy because the school has chosen to hire Peter Beck, a person with white skin, over other, unidentified candidates, The Fresno Bee reports.

Beck will teach African-American studies, Latino studies and Southeast Asian studies.

On Monday morning, a small band of activists showed up in front of the sparkling new school at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Church Avenue. The local press was also there.

Feds Force Rural Texas County to Pay Thousands to Hold Illegals

Bell County, Texas, has spent almost $200,000 so far this year on detainers, or “immigration holds,” for illegal immigrants.

Detainer requests from federal immigration officials require local law enforcement to hold illegal immigrants, detained for local charges, past the length of their jail times. Typically, the holding time is 48 hours. During this time, federal agents decide whether or not to deport the individuals.

The federal government does not reimburse Bell County Jail and other local detainment facilities for immigration holds, according to KDH News. The local media outlet reported that each inmate costs the Bell County jail $67.35 per day; local taxpayers are forced to subsidize such costs.

Bell County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Donnie Adams told KDH, “After we get through with them, we notify ICE that they are ready for release. If they want the hold, they get 48 hours to pick them up.”

Residents in counties around the nation feel the strain of immigration holds, but some areas have started ignoring detainer requests. As Breitbart Texas previously reported, officials in over a dozen counties in Southern California declared that detainer requests from federal immigration agents will be ignored.

Judicial Watch Sues Justice Department for Records on Obama’s Massive Effort to Grant Clemency to Criminals

Among the groups that comprise Clemency Project 2014 are Federal Defenders, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Families Against Mandatory Minimums (FAMM), the American Bar Association (ABA), and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL). Judicial Watch has now filed suit for DOJ communications with each of the organizations.

Judicial Watch announced today that on June 23, 2014, it filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the Department of Justice (DOJ) to obtain records of communication between the office of Deputy Attorney General James Cole and Federal Defenders: the ACLU, FAMM, the ABA, and NACCL relating to the organizations’ “Clemency Project 2014” (Judicial Watch v. Department of Justice (No. 1:14-cv-01048)). The Clemency Project supports an initiative announced by the DOJ in April that would empower President Obama to grant mass clemency to as many as 20,000 convicted felons now serving time for drug-related sentences.

The FOIA lawsuit filed pursuant to a March 10, 2014, FOIA request seeks the following:

Any and all records of communications between employees or officials of the Office of Deputy Attorney General James Cole and representatives of the Federal Defenders, the ACLU, FAMM, the ABA, and NACDL related to, or in connection with or regarding the ‘Clemency Project 2014’ from January 1, 2014 to the present date.

On April 23, 2014, Deputy Attorney James Cole announced the Obama clemency initiative saying it would encourage federal inmates sentenced under what he termed “out-of-date laws” to petition to have their sentences “commuted, or reduced, by the President of the United States.” The clemency initiative is part of the Obama administration’s effort to end alleged racial discrimination in drug-related sentences. It started with the 2010 signing of the Fair Sentencing Act, which for the first time in decades relaxed drug-crime sentences. The measure severely weakened a decades-old law enacted during the crack cocaine epidemic that ravaged urban communities nationwide in the 1980s.

The Amazing World of Kreskin – The Power of Suggestion

“The magic is as wide as a smile and as narrow as a wink, loud as laughter and quiet as a tear, tall as a tale and deep as emotion. So strong, it can lift the spirit. So gentle, it can touch the heart. It is the magic that begins the happily ever after.” – Unknown

Converted Muslims embrace new faith, celebrate end of Ramadan

As Ramadan comes to an end, Islamic leaders in the Miami area say the Muslim community is growing and continuing to embrace new cultures.

Keyla Calix, a 25-year-old Honduran living in downtown Miami, didn’t think her friend’s gift of a Quran would lead her to reject her Catholic upbringing.

But two years later, after a serious evaluation of Islam sparked by the holy book, she will head to a mosque Monday morning for Eid al-Fitr, a celebration that marks the end of Ramadan.

“My family thought that Islam was just for Arabs,” Calix said, “but Islam is for everyone, not just for Arabs or Pakistani.”

Miami’s Islamic community will celebrate the end of Islam’s holy month alongside a series of new beginnings, like Calix’s. She is part of a growing segment of Miami’s population converting to Islam, according to Miami’s Islamic leaders.

Twenty years ago, there were five mosques in the Miami area. Now, there are about 30, said Shabbir Motorwala, a member of COSMOS, the Coalition of South Florida Muslim Organizations.

Two to three people a month are converting to Islam in each South Florida mosque, said Mohammed Badat, the Imam at a mosque in Kendall. Many of them, he said, are Hispanic women like Calix.

Palm Beach County brothers get 6 years for running food stamp scam

With engineering degrees from top universities, Ali Jaber, 52, and his 42-year-old brother, Hadi, could have become role models for fellow immigrants, prosecutor Carolyn Bell told U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks. Instead, they used their store, Fajita’s Meat & Fish on 10th Avenue North, to defraud the federal government.

Two Palm Beach County brothers who funneled millions in federal food stamp money back to their native Lebanon were sentenced to nearly six years in prison Thursday for scamming the program that is intended to feed the poor.

[…]

Even their attorneys acknowledged that the two should have known better than to get involved in the scam. Instead of charging customers’ debit-style food stamp cards for groceries, the brothers gave the customers cash. They charged customers as much as 50 percent commission for the service and were reimbursed by the government for the bogus transactions.

“He should have known better at his age and with his education,” said attorney Fred Haddad, who represents Ali Jaber, who has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.

The British Empire is ‘something to be proud of’

By three to one, British people think the British Empire is something to be proud of rather than ashamed of – they also tend to think it left its colonies better off, and a third would like it to still exist.

Britain has long found it difficult to evaluate its former empire. Imperial nostalgia on television has been shamed by historians, and modern prime ministers have expressed ‘deep sorrow’ for Britain’s role in slavery – but they have also called on British people to celebrate the legacy of the Empire.

Among the British public, feelings tend to be positive. A new YouGov survey finds that most think the British Empire is more something to be proud of (59%) rather than ashamed of (19%). 23% don’t know. Young people are least likely to feel pride over shame when it comes to the Empire, though about half (48%) of 18-24 year olds do. In comparison, about two-thirds (65%) of over 60s feel mostly proud.

Economically, the British Empire invested in infrastructure, established trading routes and installed institutions – but it also extracted resources, oversaw famines and in some cases left behind instability. Though many (36%) are unsure, British people do tend to think that, overall, former British colonies are now better off for having been part of the empire, by 49-15%.

Elections Are Coming And Republicans Are Wasting Their Time (Again) by David Horowitz

If there is a racist party in America, it is the Democratic Party, which imposes racial animosity on virtually every aspect of American life. It is the Democratic Party and its teacher union base that has trapped millions of Hispanic and African American children in failing schools. They are there because their parents can’t afford to do what Democratic officials all the way up to the White House do: send their children to private schools where they will get an education.

It’s three and a half months to election time, and Republicans are spinning their wheels over whether they should appear moderate or loaded for bear, whether they should take the high road or the take-no-prisoners low road.

If you are a Republican candidate the first and most important thing to understand is this: It really doesn’t matter. Mitt Romney was a high-road candidate like every Republican presidential nominee since Ronald Reagan’s second run. Republicans love to tell uplifting stories that highlight the virtues of the opportunity society they intend to restore when elected. Well and good. But who is going to listen to your story when your opponents are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to portray you as a woman-hater, a racist, and a champion of the selfish rich?

Unless Republicans are thinking about an answer to this attack, they are wasting their time. Of course sometimes Democrats screw up so big they hand Republicans the election, and it doesn’t matter what their strategy is. 2014 may be such an election

But strategy can also swing an unwinnable election, as the Democrats showed in 2012. And there’s no reason to think that Republicans will come up with an answer to the Democrat attacks by 2016.
