Barletta: Obama Deportation Claims Are Smokescreen for Amnesty

“You hear a lot of things from this administration. I hear that if you like your health care plan, you can keep it. I also hear that our borders are more secure now than ever.” – Rep. Lou Barletta (PA-11)

Congressman Lou Barletta, PA-11, today highlighted a report from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) and made the case that the Obama Administration is artificially inflating its claims of deportations of illegal immigrants in order to move toward a broad plan for amnesty. At an event at the National Press Club, CIS revealed its report that indicates that border “turn-aways” are being counted as deportations in order to create the illusion that U.S. borders are more secure than they really are.

“You hear a lot of things from this administration,” Barletta said, comparing administration claims about health care to those about deportations. “I hear that if you like your health care plan, you can keep it. I also hear that our borders are more secure now than ever.”

The CIS report, titled “Deportation Numbers Unwrapped,” finds fault with Obama Administration claims that it has deported a record number of illegal immigrants as compared to previous administrations. In fact, CIS found that more than half of the deportations attributed to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were the result of border arrests, or “turn-aways,” that would never have been counted as removals in prior years. The number of deportations resulting from actual interior enforcement by ICE has fallen steadily – by 19-percent from 2011 to 2012, and by 22 percent by the end of 2013.
