Why did city officials delete so many texts?

The citizens of Seattle have paid dearly for the city government’s embrace of lawlessness in the summer of 2020 and now taxpayers are likely to pay still more. Details are sparse on the settlement of a lawsuit against the city brought by business owners who suffered from the destructive mayhem accommodated by then-Mayor Jenny Durkan. But it’s a safe bet that the legal bill for the city’s disgraceful conduct will not be small.

Mike Carter reports in the Seattle Times on the settlement of the suit focused on the city’s handling of the so-called Capitol Hill Organized Protests in 2020:

A series of clashes between Black Lives Matter protesters and police prompted Seattle officials to withdraw officers from the East Precinct on Capitol Hill, and thousands of people flooded the area surrounding nearby Cal Anderson Park. Roads were blocked off — with help from the city — and encampments sprang up in the park.
