The hiring of two new magistrates in Hamilton County has judges divided along racial lines.

Five black judges have submitted a letter to Hamilton County Municipal Court judges regarding the recent hiring of two white magistrates over black candidates.

The letter claims that one of the white judges selected is less qualified for the position than three black candidates who were also considered for the job.

The letter, dated Dec. 15, asked that a decision on the judges be delayed to make sure those voting are “acting in a manner that is not discriminatory.” It also asked that a standard for magistrate selection be set and agreed upon by all voting parties.
