My wife, Gena, and I were heartbroken again with the rest of the nation when we heard about Thursday’s mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. We join with others in praying for God’s help, presence and peace for the victims and their families and friends.

To be sure, no amount of answers as to why this tragedy occurred can heal the hearts of those precious souls in the Roseburg community. But while they seek solace in their grief and lay their loved ones to rest, Americans wrestle again with these questions: Why? Why are so many mass shootings occurring? And what can be done to reduce their number?

Between 1966 and 2012, there were 90 mass shootings in the United States, according to CNN. But, according to an analysis by researchers from Harvard School of Public Health and Northeastern University, the rate of mass shootings in the U.S. has tripled from 2011 to 2014.

What’s interesting is that the Harvard researchers also concluded that “the reason for the accelerating rate of mass shootings has not yet been identified.”
