There is no one solution to this complex issue, although awareness is a vital first step.
With Houston enjoying the growth, prosperity and optimism that comes from an oil-boom economy, we can think of no better time to pay attention to one of the city’s most disturbing criminal enterprises, one that has taken root in the sullied shadows of our community and thrives in tandem with the city’s growth. In our midst, women and children are being sold, tortured and abused as sex slaves. Forced into labor and prostitution, they end up working in bars, nail salons, restaurants, massage parlors, private homes and other places where they can be exploited and mistreated. As others have noted, they are hiding in plain sight.
