Investigators said at the time that the murder appeared to be drug related since the all three men are Texas Chicano Brotherhood gang members.

The trial of a Texas Chicano Brotherhood gang member begins today for the murder of a McAllen man found inside a burning a pickup truck.

Jurors were chosen Monday in the case involving Christopher George Hernandez, 25, of Pharr, who is accused of being involved with the murder of a McAllen man over a drug deal gone wrong.

The burned body of Ryan Sewell, 26, was discovered July 21, 2014, after firefighters were called about 1:30 a.m. to the 3500 block of North McColl Road in McAllen for a report of a burning car.

Ten days later, Douglas Esteban Jasso, 30, was the first suspect to be arrested in connection with the man’s murder after police raided his home in the 300 block of Primrose Avenue, where police believe Sewell was tortured and murdered.

Anthony Joe Cortinas, 29, of Mission, and Hernandez were arrested in connection with the murder on Aug. 8, 2014, and Sept. 18, 2014, respectively.

Investigators with the U.S. Marshal’s Service, the McAllen Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety learned that Cortinas had been staying at an apartment near the intersection of North Point Boulevard and East Goodwin Road near Mission and arrested him there.

Hernandez was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service with the help from Texas Department of Public Safety, Border Patrol and Brooks County authorities.
