Former sheriff’s lieutenant sues Clarke, alleging reverse discrimination

A former Milwaukee County sheriff’s lieutenant contends in a federal lawsuit that Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. passed him over repeatedly for promotions because he is a white male.

John R. Nelson also says his assignment to a third-shift job in the jail records division in February 2012 was retaliation for him filing a discrimination complaint with a federal agency a few days earlier. He had been a divisional commander working first shift and had worked for the department since 1994.

After filing his discrimination complaint, the department also opened two disciplinary investigations on Nelson, but he was “fully exonerated in April 2012,” the complaint says.

Four of the 12 captain promotions by Clarke since 2010 went to white men, with eight going to women or minorities, said William Rettko, Nelson’s attorney.
