India shows harmful effects of affirmative action

I have seen laws like this in India, and I didn’t like what happened. India, after all, was the first country to ban Salman Rushdie’s novel Satanic Verses. And its affirmative action programs, meant to help the disadvantaged, have been captured by the privileged elite.

Columnist Andrew Bolt has been has been found in breach of the Racial Discrimination Act. If the judgment offends, our criticism should focus on the law that led to it in terms of the issues that are legitimate matters of public debate.

If individuals are attacked by name, the requirement for due diligence on the part of the columnist to get the facts right increases proportionately.

But even if the silencing consequences of the Racial Discrimination Act are no worse than those arising from defamation laws, why give two separate grounds?
