When the New York Times launched the 1619 project three years ago, it was greeted with derision by most mainstream historians. However, because it centres around the role of black people in American history, it has become regarded as bordering on racism to denounce this weird idea too vociferously and in this way the mad ideas upon which the enterprise is founded have been able to flourish.
