Europe: integration problems

This year’s Christmas celebrations have aggravated the problem of migrants integrating into Europe. In early December, politically correct Denmark was embroiled in a scandal surrounding the installation of the Christmas tree which was vehemently opposed by local Muslims. At the end of the day, the tree was installed, something that never took place in Belgium, where the authorities referred to the necessity of respecting the religious feelings of local Muslims.

It seems that the much-hyped European policy of tolerance and multiculturalism has finally flopped, some experts say.

More than 20 million Muslims currently reside on the territory of Europe, in other words, every eleventh citizen of France and every twentieth citizen of Britain and Germany is Muslim. Experts point to immigrants’ reluctance to accept the rules of life in the EU countries. Igor Beloborodov, of the Moscow-based Institute for Demographic Studies, attributes the problem to cultural differences.

European immigrants include those coming from the Middle East or Africa. Some EU experts point out these immigrants’ persistent unwillingness to integrate into the European society. For example, at least 10 percent of German immigrants are unwilling to attend language courses and recognize the state where they reside. They act as consumers only, says Irina Medvedeva of the Institute of Demographic Security in Moscow.
