Britain used to be a country that cherished political freedom. That was the spirit which brought us victory in two world wars and made us one of the world’s most stable democracies. But today our liberties are being eroded by the malign influence of political correctness.

Across swathes of the state there is a creeping new sense of oppression, where bullying offi-cials demand obedience to the dogma of multi-cultural diversity. In the name of tolerance, the commissars of the public sector become ever more intolerant.
That disturbing trend has been highlighted by news of the outrageous decision by Rotherham Council in South Yorkshire to remove three young children from their family, simply on the grounds that their foster parents are members of Ukip.
According to these parents, the council did not question their quality of care but instead argued that, because of their political views, they were not “a good cultural match” for the children, who are said to be from eastern Europe.
It was the totalitarian Soviet Union that punished people for their political outlook, denying full citizenship to those who did not subscribe to the party creed. The thought police and the breaking-up of families were key features of this tyranny. Now the same attitude seems to have been imported into Labour-run Rotherham.
