Steve Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies says it will actually be tougher for Democrats to push through some sort of comprehensive immigration reform bill with President Obama than it would have been under a President Romney, because he could have encouraged his fellow Republicans in the House to go along.
Immigrant rights groups say now that the Latino vote has come out big for President Obama, it’s time for payback, 1200 WOAI news reports.
Christina Jimenez of the United We Dream Coalition tells 1200 WOAI news they will press in the coming Congress for complete and total amnesty for all 11 million illegal immigrants living in the United States, including a path not just to legal status, but to citizenship.
“Permanent policy changes that will include a road map to citizenship for our parents and our community,” she said.
Jimenez says immigrant rights groups will also be demanding access to drivers licenses and the granting of in state tuition to ‘all state residents regardless of citizenship status,’ and additional benefits for illegals, which she now calls ‘aspiring citizens.’
She says it’s time for Republicans and conservatives who have long fought amnesty to realize that it’s time for them to step aside.
“The result of these elections clearly show that the anti immigrant agenda is a loser, and this is very clear for Republicans,” she said.
And, by the way, Jimenez refers to these individuals not as illegal immigrants, but as ‘aspiring citizens.’
But Steve Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies says it is not going to happen.
“You have a Democratic president who wants it, but you have a Republican House which lines up against it,” Camarota said.
