Latino Leaders Plan 99% March to Support Occupy Wall Street

New York’s Latino community will walk the walk next week to show its support for Occupy Wall Street – planning an 11-mile march from Washington Heights to lower Manhattan as a sign of solidarity.

State Sen. Adriano Espaillat, City Council Member Ydanis Rodríguez and other Latino leaders are planning the symbolic trek on Monday to raise awareness for the plight of urban communities.

“The idea is to show unity with the Occupy Wall Street movement,” said Ibrahim Khan, a spokesperson for Sen. Espaillat’s office. “There is no better representation of the 99 percent than our community.”

The elected officials plan to announce the march Thursday morning in Washington Heights in front of an abandoned building to signify the struggles of poor communities. The northern Manhattan neighborhood, with a large Dominican population, is one of New York City’s Latino epicenters.

The march hopes to add diversity to the Occupy Wall Street protests; some organizers have been eager to attract more Latinos.
