The crisis of Asian migrants

Buddhist spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has called on Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to help Asian boat people following the discovery of mass graves in Malaysia.

His plea came as thousands of protestors took to the streets in Myanmar to condemn foreign criticism of their country’s persecution of the poverty-stricken Rohingya Muslims. The crisis is top of the agenda in today’s meeting of 17 Asian countries as international pressure grows over the plight of the migrants cast adrift in rickety boats on the Andaman Sea. The Dalai Lama said yesterday that Myanmar opposition leader Suu Kyi should act to help the stateless Rohingya who have fallen into the hands of brutal people traffickers after fleeing apartheid-like conditions. Despite appealing to her twice since 2012, the Dalai Lama said Suu Kyi had kept silent about the crisis and she should do more to help those risking death to escape Myanmar. “It’s very sad,” he said. “I hope Aung San Suu Kyi, as a Nobel laureate, can do something. I met her two times, first in London and then the Czech Republic. I mentioned about this problem and she told me she found some difficulties, that things were not simple but very complicated. “But in spite of that I feel she can do something.”
