Residents graduate from YPD’s Hispanic Citizens Police Academy

The next Citizens Police Academy will be provided in English during the fall.

Another 12 Yuma residents now have a better understanding of the variety of duties and responsibilities within law enforcement after having graduated Wednesday from the Yuma Police Department’s Hispanic Citizens Police Academy.

The Citizens Police Academy, which is designed for residents of all backgrounds and occupations, is part of a continuing program hosted by YPD to develop people’s awareness and understanding of the role of law enforcement in their community.

Among the recent graduates of Class 4 of the Hispanic Citizens Police Academy was New York Life Insurance Company agent Marci Rios and his wife, Carolina. Rios says he thinks it’s something everyone who lives in the city of Yuma should take the time to do.

“There are some outstanding police officers in this city,” said Rios, who also took the academy eight years ago when it was taught in English. “Attending this will give everyone a better appreciation of what police officers do to protect us.”

The academy, which is eight weeks long and meets one night a week, provides an opportunity to meet several officers who instruct various topics relating to police work. Its goal is to have better-informed citizens.
