Considering the pace of medical advancements and Americans’ reluctance to work, he determined that the “math is scary.”
Television host and popular social commentator Mike Rowe recently explained why he is concerned for America’s sustainability in a recent interview with The Blaze. While some speculate climate change or nuclear war could bring about the end of the country’s unparalleled period of prosperity, Rowe finds reason for alarm in the attitude of too many of its citizens.
Americans have largely grown accustomed to the attitude that hard work is something to be avoided, he said, noting the arbitrary retirement age of 65 is an ideal in need of adjustment. Due to increases in medical proficiency, resulting in longer lifespans, he said individuals spending decades of their lives in retirement is a disastrous proposition.
“They are going to be retired for 40 years?” he asked. “There’s just no universe possible where you have enough money to live on if you’re an average Joe 40 years after punching out.”
Rowe suggested that “we’re facing this mess … because people are truly still clinging to the idea that, ‘OK, I worked for 30 years and now I’m done.’”
